CfP: International Anticorruption Regimes in Europe
1. February 2009
Interdisciplinary Conference to be held at the University of Konstanz, Germany
Department of Politics and Management and Center of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration“, in cooperation with the European Community Studies Association Germany (AEI), Berlin
Since the mid-1990s, four major international organisations (European Union, Council of Europe, OECD, United Nations) have contributed to the emergence of anticorruption regimes which are of growing importance for all European countries. Given their strong monitoring procedures, the regimes established by the Council of Europe and the OECD seem to be particularly promising. However, these regimes have received very little scholarly attention. Also the linkages between the various regimes, their interrelations with governmental and nongovernmental anticorruption initiatives, and the role of cultural factors in transnational anticorruption ventures have remained severely under-researched issues. This conference shall bring together recognised scholars and younger researchers from different disciplines as well as practitioners in this rather young field of international regime formation. Opening up a comprehensive perspective on core questions related to the fight against corruption in Europe, this gathering shall contribute to gaining a better understanding of the various successes as well as problems and challenges in this field. Therefore, contributions dealing with (but not confined to) the following aspects are most welcome:
- International anticorruption regimes from a comparative perspective
(legal and political regulations contained in international anticorruption conventions; the approaches of different anticorruption regimes; successes and failures of anticorruption regimes in Europe) - Fighting against corruption within the EU and beyond
(most recent developments in fighting corruption within the EU; EU anticorruption policy related to old and new member states and (new) neighbouring countries; Is the EU as an organisation particularly susceptible to corruption?) - Problems, challenges, and perspectives regarding international anticorruption measures
(mismatches between anticorruption measures and the public perception of corruption; mismatches between (inter)governmental and nongovernmental anticorruption initiatives; International anticorruption regimes as cultural imperialism?)
Abstracts of proposed conference papers (1 page, incl. brief comments on research experience and institutional affiliation) may be submitted by email until 1 FEBRUARY 2009 (Sebastian.Wolf[at]uni-konstanz.de). Full papers are due by 1 July 2009. The conference is funded by the Cluster of Excellence 16 “Cultural Foundations of Integration“. For presenters, travel expenses may be reimbursed up to a certain limit. Conference language is German or English (depending on applications). The conference papers shall be published as an edited volume.
